What more can I say about motherhood that hasn’t already been printed, quoted, or shouted from the rooftops a million times since man began celebrating this precious role? Some of us have great mothers, some bad, and some people aren’t lucky enough to have that woman in their lives nearly long enough. Media loves to bombard us with the cookie-cutter images of what a good mother must look like, what she must say and do, and what our relationships with them should feel like (Hint: think of a soft-focus commercial for certain hygiene products. Flowers, white sweaters, and calm, wise motherly advice with never a hair out of place). And according to standard Mother’s Day fare, everybody’s Mom is in need of a bouquet of flowers, a generic box of assorted chocolates, and an even more generic greeting card, usually chosen at the last minute at your local store.
